UNDR CTRL GUIDE

How to organize your life without keeping it all in your head

Feeling behind usually is not about doing too little. It is about carrying too much in your head: the bill due Thursday, the dentist to call, the oil change you meant to book, the trial that ends next week. Getting organized starts with putting every one of those dates in one place you trust, then looking at it once a week.

Free weekly reset sheet

Ten questions, one for each part of a week: bills, money, subscriptions, appointments, home, car, to-dos, household, work and next week. Go down the list once a week and write what you find.

1. Get it out of your head

Sit down once and write everything you are trying to remember, in no order. Bills, appointments, chores, things to fix, things to buy, calls to make. Most people find thirty or forty items on the first pass.

2. Sort it by area

Put each item under one heading: bills and money, appointments, home, car, to-dos and the household. Every item that has a date gets that date written next to it.

3. Keep one place for dates

Two calendars and a sticky note is how dates go missing. Choose one place for every date and put new ones there the moment they come up.

4. Share what is shared

If you live with someone, the bills, the chores and the car belong to both of you. Keep those where both of you can see them, so nobody has to be the one who remembers everything.

5. Do a weekly reset

Once a week, go down the sheet: what is due, what is left, what is coming up. It takes about ten minutes and is the habit that keeps everything else working.

Doing it in UNDR CTRL

UNDR CTRL is built around that one place for everything. Turn on the areas you use and hide the rest:

  • Bills, with what is left after they are paid. Keep track of bills.
  • Subscriptions, monthly and yearly, on the same list. Keep track of subscriptions.
  • Tasks and appointments, with dates and repeats.
  • Home upkeep and projects with a budget. Home maintenance.
  • Car dates, service history and recall checks. Car maintenance.
  • Work and side income, there if you need them.
  • One calendar feed to iPhone, Google Calendar or Outlook, shared with your household or kept to yourself.
